| Time article review: Life on the New Planet? Time Magazine Wednesday, Apr. 25, 2007
Well I've just found this article and it really caught my attention. Scientists have discovered an Earth-like planet 20 lightyears away (they named it Gliese 581c). Sure it's far away, but looking at how fast science has developed in the last 50 years, and how it's development gets faster and faster, I wouldn't be surprised to hear about someone discovering a way to travel at the speed of light, in 20 years time. The only thing that bothers me is that I'll probably dead by then, and wouldn't get a chance to even take a glimpse of it. The article says that, if there calculations are right then the planet's climate is similar to Earth's, thus it is possible that there is some kind of life on it. Of course we don't need to get that excited about it, cause we can hear about organisms living below the polar icecap, so it is quite probable for life to evolve on such a planet as Gliese 581c.
| Hi everyone!
It's been a while since I last wrote but I figured I should start writing reguraly again.
I have to say that the jokes in the fourth podcast were not too funny. I think they were a bit strained. But of course that's just my opinion. They were actually quite witty but just a little too witty for me. :) I really think that the podcasts are getting better and better, and I'm definitely thinking of taking part in one of them at least, one way or another. The best thing about the 4th was that Joe went around to interview people and even asked one of our other teachers as well. I find the idea great cause this way we can hear people's opinions about different things, and most of all maybe get to know each other better via these opinions. Well looking forward to the next class, and podcast!!!!
| Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (my needs)
Well to begin with I saw the movie first of this great Douglas Adams book. And I fell off my chair in complete pain and agony, catching breath after breath cause I was laughing so hard. So I decided I must read the original books. You see the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is only one book out of a series of six. So I bought myself (for an immense amount of money) an English version of the series all in one really heavy and thick book (it looks great on the shelf too... really makes people think your smart and everything that you have thick books on your shelf and stuff like that).
So I got started with it, and up till now I've finished 2 books already. I have to admit that it's probably one of the most hilarious books that I've ever read. I suppose not everybody would like it though. It's totally British humor. If you've seen and liked Life of Brian or any Monthy Python production, or series like Faulty Towers, you'll definitely love this one.
It starts off with a simple British guy, Arthur Dent who wakes up in the morning and finds out that his house is about to be torn down because a freeway is going to be built and it's in the way. After about half an hour he gets to know that Earth will be destroyed too. He gets to know this from one of his friends, Ford who he thought was an earthling, but is in fact from another planet, and is a hitchhiker. He also writes for the galaxy's most famous book the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Which is exactly what it sound like. Basically the Guide contains lots of information about the galaxy and even more about totally irrelevant things. This one time Ford gives Arthur a Babel Fish (okey he actually sticks it in his ears) which is a kind of fish which lives in your brain and translates every kind of language into your own. This is the part with my favorite quote about the Babel Fish (Joe: I know you said we shouldn't copy anything from the book but I've got to do this one, I hope you'll forgive me by the time you have read these lines:) ) :
"Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the nonexistence of God. The argument goes something like this: ' I refuse to prove that I exist,' says God, ' for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.' 'But,' says Man, ' the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments you don't. QED. ' 'Oh dear,' says God, ' I hadn't thought of that, ' and promtly vanishes in the puff of logic."
No comment... when I read this I had to read it about ten more times cause it's so insanely brilliant and funny that I just couldn't get enough of it. But the whole books is great. I have to admit I do cheat a little, because I've seen the movie which had a narrator who had a crazy british stiff upper lip accent and he said all these incredibly insane things with such calmness that even that made me laugh by its own. So when I'm reading the book I just imagine that that guy is reading it out to me. So it does add an extra side to it all.
All in all I'd say it's one of the best book I've ever read (still reading it actually:) ) besides Mika Waltari's Sinuhe and Marquez's Hundred Years of Solitude. So I can't urge you enough to read it if you haven't done so yet. And if I haven't convinced you enough than just watch the movie and you'll be a fan in no time. Trust me on that :)
| Hi everyone!!
Thought I'd share one of my creative writing tasks with you!
Does music make you healthier?
Well to answer this question, yes it does! Many researches have proven that music stimulates the mind, helps you relax, lowers your blood pressure. Another positive side of it is that it makes you dance and enjoy yourself, and by this releasing a lot of hormones which make you happy. In my opinion it doesn't matter what kind of music you are listening to cause in my opinion everybody is different so the same kind of music might have different effects on different people. A lot of people say that classical music relaxes them, and that they can think better while listening to Mozart. But then again some people fall asleep while listening to rock music. It probably depends just on one's taste. But music altogether is good for everyone!!!
